I thought dealerships gave you cars to drive while servicing your DD

Maybe I misunderstand how dealers work when it comes to service apointments. Or maybe I'm spoiled reading DeMuro's range rover articles. But I thought dealerships gave you cars for free while yours was in the shop.

I've got my FiST in the dealer to have the suspension checked after I hit some righteous potholes. Well, they can provide a car for me when I bring it in on Monday. But it is actually Enterprise bringing one for me to rent at $28/day.

Is this normal? Are my expectations too high?

Huh, here in Norway we usually get a loaner.. can't say how it is elsewhere though.

I never got one. At Ford, Subaru, or Nissan. They drive you home and pick you up though when it's done.

some places here in STL offer free loaners, shuttle service or nothing at all. It will depend on your dealer.

Most dealerships in the U.K. will provide a courtesy car while yours is in, some won't and a few will ask you to pay. I've found most often it's down to age and drivers around 20 year old will either not be given a car or will be asked to pay a fee.

I've gotten loaners from Mazda and BMW before, but not every time. I think it is dealer discretion, and depends how long it is in the shop.

For us, if it's just a few hours, they usually just provide a shuttle. Anything more than that and we get a loaner.

Audi always gives you one. They aim to give you a newer version of your car, I've had a B8 A4, B8.5 A4 and an Allroad in the past.

Really depends on the car company. Only brands i've known to have done it are Audi, Merc, BMW and up. Pretty much has to be a luxury car for this kind of service.

In my area & experience, some have shuttles up to a certain mileage (i.e. drop you at work or home) and some have loaners and some have nothing.

My experience:

Nissan - everytime I asked, loaners were all out. Not sure if true.

Acura - never an issue, always gave me a brand new loaner & mostly without even asking, like at drop off "Here's the keys to your new ____ loaner sir. Its parked right outside")

Toyota - everytime I asked, loaners were all out. Seemed true, but still not sure.

Honda - I asked but the service wasn't going to take long enough so didn't work out - seemed fair to me.

Totally up to the dealership.

Remember though, nothing is free and if they do give you a loaner, it's probably paid for with more expensive service.

Next time you're in a service bay, count the cars and consider how much it would cost to provide loaners to every customer. They aren't doing to do that out of the kindness of their hearts.

Depends on the dealer. Most loaners are purchased by the dealer as a loaner only. Once they get so many miles they are sold sometimes as a pre-owned. Please don't take that out on the service advisers though. Most of the time sales is responsible for buying & furnishing loaners. A lot of the time they're out of loaners because sales has loaned them all out. If everyone who wanted a loaner got one half the dealerships lot would be nothing but loaner cars.

It's kind of a brand level thing.

Lux Level brands provide loaners normally.

so not at Ford, but probably at Lincoln, not at Chevy, but yes at Caddy.

Only happens with luxury brands.

It also depends on how long the car will be kept at the dealer, and also if you are getting warranty work. I've got a loaner from Chevy, so it's not just the high end brands, but other factors have to be met.

The dealership I work at we have a shuttle that will take people around town, but more like we will drop you off where you want to go and pick you up when the car is done, but we also make sure people get where they need to be when they need to be there. Some recalls have provisions for loaners or rental, but most of the time we provide a rental through Enterprise that is either covers by warranty, extended warranty, or the customer's pocket.

We carry GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Subaru, and Hyundai. All of which could get a loaner or rental depending on the situation.

I got one when my 2 day old wrx threw an cel. Maybe if it's an issue caused by the car line a faulty part they would be more likely to over something you kinda caused. Pot holes are a bitch. There are some pot holes to China near my house.

My dealership has a fleet of ten cars, Fusion and Focus, that we update every year (far as I know, I haven't been there long enough. But when we ordered a new fleet the old cars had about a year's worth of mileage.) We then sell the old loaners as used cars.

it depends on the brand and the dealer. For example when my mom's S60 needs service, the dealer brings a loaner to our house. They have a fleet of about 30 cars ranging from 1998 Volvo V70's to brand new loaded Xc60's
